Letter Regarding Rapid Status Determination (29 September)

This letter expresses the deep concerns with aspects of the DHA Rapid Status Determination process carried out in the camps.  It highlights specific concerns where the DHA had undertaken certain assurances in meetings with civil society and those were not met during the process

For more detailed reports of the DHA process in the Western Cape, please see the Assessments and Reports section

Letter to Home Affairs Regarding Shootings at Nyanga Refugee Reception Office

This letter expresses concerns raised as a result of a Cape Times article which describes the shooting of rubber bullets at people queuing outside of the Nyanga office.  The article highlights the vulnerability of foreign nationals, refugees and asylum seekers living in South Africa. Additionally, it raises concerns regarding the role of the Department of Home Affairs (DHA), who appear to have responded to the backlog of unprocessed requests and undocumented
foreign nationals by closing one of their offices. Currently the only office to process these requests is the Nyanga office, which is difficult to travel to, and
a ‘xenophobia hot-spot’.

TAC Memorandum to the Department of Home Affairs (17 July 2008)

This letter was sent in order to obtain clarification about the "registration process" started by the Government at Youngsfield on 8 July.  It expresses concerns about the process, including the lack of communication of the process to displaced people, allowing people who missed the "registration process" at their site to register, the goals and uses for the registration, the uses of the issued temporary cards and the consequences for those not able to register during the allotted timeframe.
