Roche – drop the price of trastuzumab!

On Tuesday, 7th February 2017, Swiss multinational company Roche faced global condemnation from women living with cancer, families of people with cancer, activists, scientists, researchers and health professionals from across the world. They highlighted the immoral and unconscionable tactics employed by Roche across the developed and developing world. On 27th September 2016 more than 1000 activists from the Fix the Patent Laws campaign marched to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Pretoria. We demanded that the DTI take urgent steps to fix South Africa’s outdated patent laws so that everyone can get the medicines they need. #FixPatentLaw

#BopheloHouse94 appeal convictions

On Monday 8th August the #BopheloHouse94 appeared in Bloemfontein High Court. The community healthcare workers (CHWs) were appealing their conviction in October 2015 in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court. A conviction that found them guilty of violating the Regulation of Gatherings Act for attending a peaceful night vigil outside the provincial health department.

TAC Generics perform in Durban

Johnny Clegg had a benefit concert for the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) during the International AIDS Conference in Durban in July 2016. It was a magical night, with comrades reminiscing, celebrating and thinking about the way forward. The Generics, TAC’s choir, re-formed for the night made up of TAC and SECTION27 comrades. Over 6 000 march for #Treament4All

On Monday 18th July over 6,000 activists from South Africa and across the globe took to Durban’s streets for the 21st International AIDS Conference—highlighting a massive disconnect between political promises to end AIDS and the realities on the ground of insufficient funding and health systems stretched to the breaking point. #Treatment4All

#BopheloHouse94 back in court

On 20th June 2016 the #BopheloHouse94 appeared before at the Bloemfontein High Court. The community health workers (CHWs) wanted to appeal their October 2015 convictions in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court for violations of the Regulation of Gatherings Act after they held a peaceful night vigil outside the health MEC Dr Benny Malakoane’s office. Premier Ace Magashule responds to #BopheloHouse94

On Sunday 19th June Premier Ace Magashule met with the #BopheloHouse94 – a group of community healthcare workers (CHWs) who were convicted in 2015 for taking part in a peaceful vigil in protest. The CHWs were protesting the collapse of the Free State public healthcare system and the decision of MEC of Health Dr Benny Malakoane to dismiss, without warning or cause, all approximately 3000 CHWs in the province in April 2014. In this video Premier Ace Magashule responds to the testimonies of more than 20 CHWs who reported on the significant role CHWs play in the healthcare system and the vast problems being faced in local communities since their dismissal.

Coalition demand justice now for Benny!

Activists demand Roche drops cost of vital breast cancer medicine

On Thursday 31st March, members of the Fix the Patent Laws campaign picketed outside pharmaceutical company Roche to highlight the excessive price of a life-saving breast cancer medicine. Women with a specific form of breast cancer, HER2 positive, require a medicine called trastuzumab (marketed in South Africa as Herceptin). Many women in South Africa who need trastuzumab cannot access it due to the high price charged by Roche. #RocheGreedKills
